Social Media and how it’s affecting News Coverage

This, is the era of social media. Almost every kind of information is available on social media. Social Media is used more than any kind of media these days. Today, Social Media is basically a live feed for individual life updates and also, worldwide events. Since the beginning, we've seen the expansion of profiles and pages for organizations, interests and open figures, focused on publicizing, and maybe the most critical: the reception of a trending rundown of news stories taking over the world-wide-web. Every day, my news feed is usually filled with sponsored stories and headlines about celebrity scandals and superstars and the recent social events and parties that are happening all around the world.

It’s a fact that the social media has taken over the news industry and most of the people rely on social media to obtain news. Social Media is the most dominant kind of media these days and the traffic these days on social media is also the highest. One of the main reasons that people rely on social media for news is because it’s an independent platform and people can express the way they feel without any pressure. Whereas it’s widely believed that digital and print media are usually manipulated to show and suppress certain news events that may cause panic or mayhem between the people of the country.

Another reason that the social media has taken over the news industry is because of the presence of all the important personalities and celebrities. Nowadays, every other actor, politician, athlete, artist etc. have profiles on social media sites and they are active as ever. This is a very important reason because people prefer to hear every other announcement or news directly from the celebrity not from some news channel who’s going to present it on the news by adding spices turning it into a gossip. People would rather prefer to follow the direct source to get knowledge thus they use social media to follow these personalities to stay aware and obtain news directly.

Another big reason why people use social media to obtain news is because it has become a huge network. It has a very large user base. So when there is some news, people can express their opinions about it. People can share their knowledge regarding the news and can also influence a lot of people’s opinions. There are times when there are debates which can prove the news to be valid or invalid. Also, it’s free. And it has become so huge that it rarely misses any news on things that are happening around the world. There are tons of blogs and pages which provide news of every genre. Whether if its music, sports scores, who is dating who, celebrity clashes, political conflicts, or any other genre. Everything is there on social media. Moreover, there are sources that are constantly working to expose hidden agendas behind everything. They can leak stuff on social media and in a minute the whole world would know. Whereas other forms of media cannot work like that.


In the end, I would say that there are still a lot of sources that provide news and people might still depend on those sources. But as the whole world is dominated by social media, people also like to obtain news from social media because of the exclusivity and reliability of the news. They believe that social media provides news that news channels or newspapers cannot show because of the nature of the news. Whereas on social media, people can obtain news explicitly without getting censored. Whether the news is classified, NSFW, or contains leaked content, people have access to it. Also, the social interaction with other users and exclusive announcements from personalities around the world, people prefer social media for getting news and rely more on it than any other form of media.
